Al-Sader halts attacks against the Spanish; Spanish government defends withdrawing its forces from Iraq
Iraq-Spain, Politics, 4/20/2004
The new Spanish government yesterday defended its decision to withdraw its forces from Iraq before the right opposition which considered, by its leader Maryano Rakhwe that this will make " Spain more fragile towards terrorism." The Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angle Moratinos said that the allegation that Spain submitted to terrorism when it decided to withdraw its forces from Iraq is a "false" conclusion.
Moratinos added in an interview with Kadina Sur radio that when the former Spanish former government told us "we will head for Iraq it was not because of terrorism, rather for disclosing the mass destruction weapons and removing them." Moratinos considered that the decision of the withdrawal of the forces from Iraq " will lead by the ultimate end to enhance our relations with our basic partners and allies and create a new impetus at the UN."
Against the Spanish decision, the government of Norway yesterday stressed that its forces in Iraq will stay until the end of the set time scheduled on June 30, in reply to the call advocated on Sunday by the former prime minister to withdraw the 150 soldiers so far left in Iraq.
