The EU and the situation in Iraq

The EU commissioner Romano Prodi said that the UN has to resume political and military supervision in Iraq, noting simultaneously that this matter will not be easy.
Prodi said during a meeting for the Italian opposition in Rome that no body can deny the fact that it will face tremendous difficulty to reach a solution for the Iraqi problem. He stressed the need of putting an end to the standing situation.
In this effect, the Italian foreign minister Franco Frateini met with the UN special envoy to Iraq al-Akhdar al-Ibraheimi. Frateini said in a speech before the Italian parliament that he will also call on the US administration for adopting a new resolutions at the UN to clearly and officially legitimatize the Iraqi government which is presumed to be formed by the end of June.
