Sharon seeks to exclude al-Quds from negotiations, palestinian diplomat
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 4/16/2004

Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, is seeking to "exclude the question of Al-Quds from negotiations" and cancel thus all peace agreements and projects ratified by the international community, notably the road map, Abou Marwan, Palestinian ambassador in Rabat, said.

Sharon's current visit to Washington aims at gaining support to his "unilateral separation plan that makes withdrawal from Gaza a final solution. He also wants guarantees that Washington will not request a withdrawal back to the borders of 1967," Abou Marwan said in an interview published Thursday by "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" daily.

The diplomat explained that "Ariel Sharon needs U.S. guarantees to make sure that his plan will work." The Israeli prime minister is exploiting the upcoming elections in the US and Bush's need of an initiative to settle the Middle East issue to compensate his failure in Iraq, he commented.

We hope, nonetheless, he went on, that the American president "will not give such guarantees to Sharon. This would mean the cancelling of the road map and all the agreements on the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

"Any accord to resolve this conflict should be ratified by the United Nations that should play a role in this question even though all the security council and general assembly's resolutions have been breached by the Israeli government," the ambassador pointed out.

Abou Marwan recalled in this vein Morocco's efforts to find a solution to the conflict in the Middle east, underlining that the kingdom "remains one of the main pillars in the Arab political scene."

The late king Hassan II (father of king Mohammed VI) was "always concerned by what was going on in the Palestinian territories," he said. Abou Marwan added that king Mohammed VI, chairman of Al-Quds committee, deems the "preservation of the cultural, civilizational, religious and historical specificity of the city of Al-Quds Asharif a priority and responsibility he took upon himself on behalf of the whole Islamic world.
