Morocco is not concerned with reforms Imposed from abroad, Party Leader
Morocco, Politics, 4/15/2004
Moroccans have opted for change and reform since several years and they are not concerned with any reform imposed from abroad, first secretary of the party of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) said in Istanbul Wednesday.
Mohamed El Yazghi, who is participating in the first congress of democrats in the Islamic world, noted that Morocco, through the royal determination and the resolve of democratic forces, has opted for the democratic choice.
Moroccans are perfectly aware that there are no definitive assets in terms of democracy and that no democratic system can pretend to be perfect, said the El Yazghi whose party is member of the coalition in the Government.
"Democracy is a long process which faces several enemies who fear that the values of social justice, freedom, and equality of chances might undermine their interests and ambitions," he went on.
The first secretary warned of the currents that seek to "Islamize society" and "redress" through violence and constraint.
The first secretary highlighted the importance of the theme discussed in the congress. "It enables us to exchange ideas with political leaders of different countries and benefit from their experience. It is also an opportunity to talk about our experience as a socialist democratic party that has been struggling for 40 years for democracy and human rights," he said.
The congress of democrats groups political leaders from the Islamic world and former and current officials who are probing in the meeting various aspects of democracy.
It is organized by the American democratic institute for international affairs (NDI) in collaboration with the United Nations program for Development (UNDP) and the Turkish foundation for Democracy.
