Iranian mediation delegation between Washington and al- Sader arrives in Iraq
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 4/15/2004
An Iranian diplomatic delegation arrived yesterday in Baghdad to help in easing down the conditions in Iraq, following Washington's request from Tehran to interfere with Muqtada al-Sader to halt his resistance for the American occupation army.
News reports in Tehran quoted diplomatic sources that the delegation is headed by the director of the Gulf region affairs at the Iranian foreign ministry, Hussein Sadiqi, and he had started meetings to be briefed with the standing situation in Iraq.
The Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi had announced that the US asked Iran to contribute to easing down conditions in Iraq.
Kharazi said following a meeting for the Iranian Cabinet that Tehran will work in this direction, but the problem lies in that Washington complicates matters by proceeding into the wrong path, as he alleged.
He explained that Washington's request came in a message for the Iranian leadership handed over by the Swiss embassy in Tehran in charge of supervising the US affairs there.
This month, however, is considered the bloodiest for the American occupation forces since the collapse of the Iraqi regime in 2003, the army admitted the killing of more than 70 of its soldiers in clashes with the Iraqi resistance.
Kharazi called for wisdom in dealing with Iraq, noting that the Americans " do not know the nature of the Iraqi people, therefore they have to make less mistakes."
Relations were severed between Washington and Tehran following a group of Iranian students occupation of the American embassy in Tehran in 1979 and holding 52 Americans inside it for 44 days. Two years before, the American President George W. Bush classified Iran as one of the countries of the "Axis of the evil" together with Northern Korea and Iraq.
Senior Shiite clergies in Iraq and even in Iraq alienate themselves from the uprising of al-Sader's supporters. N.
