King Abdullah: we foiled unprecedented terrorist plan, Jordan would have never witnessed
Jordan, Local, 4/14/2004

The Jordanian king Abdullah II said yesterday that the "terrorist plan" which the security forces foiled on Monday would have killed " thousands of civilians lives " describing it as " a crime which the Kingdom would have never witnessed."

On Monday, the Jordanian authorities announced it has " oiled" an " unprecedented" schemes and arrested most of the suspected persons except one who is still fleeing. This, however, following the confiscation of "large amounts of weapons and explosives " in five cars.

In a message he had addressed to the intelligence director lt. gen. Saad Kheir, the King said "we and the homeland witnessed during the past days very critical conditions after we learnt what was planned for our committed people at the hands of a group of terrorists." He added that the security forces foiled "attempts to bombard vehicles filled with explosives targeting civilian and government establishments." The official spokeswoman for the Jordanian government Asmaa Khuder said that the specialized side " confiscated most of the explosives, the cars and weapons which were prepared for use." She added " most of the wanted persons were detained and there is still one suspected and there are efforts to detain him."

In total, the Jordanian security forces confiscated five cars loaded with weapons and explosives of high sensitivity equipped to be used against Jordanian targets and American objectives, especially the US embassy in Amman. Jordanian security officers said earlier this month that vehicles loaded with explosives entered the Kingdom from Syria, but the Jordanian government was careful later to deny any involvement for the Syrian government in this matter.

In another development, the Jordanian security court on Monday sentenced three persons: two Jordanians and one Iraqi for seven and a half year imprisonment after they were convicted of smuggling unlicensed weapons and ammunition to Jordan and sneaking to the Jordanian territories in August 2003. The court found as non- guilty a fourth who is Jordanian.
