One security man, one armed Islamist were killed in a chase in al-Riyadh
Saudi Arabia, Local, 4/13/2004

News reports quoted witnesses as saying that they saw two bodies one of them is for a security man and the second was for a man who was chased by the security forces. They said they also saw four wounded security men following confrontations with chased people in one quarters to the west of the capital Riyadh on Monday evening.

The Saudi police besieged a group of persons suspected to be armed Islamists in eastern al-Rawabai area in Riyadh.

People of the area said they heard intensive fire and explosions that seemed to be resulting from using RPG and mortars and scores of police cars were seen heading to that area.

Several suspected persons including security men were killed in confrontations that took place especially in Riyadh. A confrontation took place one week ago in Riyadh between the security men and Saudi activists, one of them was killed and the other wounded. The two were wanted by the security in matters relating to activities described as terrorists.

The two men were not on the list of 36 wanted circulated by the Saudi security on December 6th. This number decreased to 22, who are 20 Saudis and two Moroccans. This followed the killing of three suspects by the bullets of the security forces while the forth surrendered.

The Saudi authorities, however, are organizing a campaign to arrest the supporters of al-Qaida organization since the Riyadh attacks which claimed the life of 52 persons in last May and November.

Hundreds of suspected persons were detained over ties with al-Qaida organization in the Kingdom, where the security forces stressed that large amounts of weapons and explosive belts were found.
