Two demonstrations in Damascus and al-Azhar al-Jihad: Iraq's incidents are like the uprising of 1987
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 4/10/2004

The "Islamic Jihad" movement in Palestine described the fighting taking place in Iraq as "a real uprising similar to that which took place in Palestine in 1987," while the Jordanian King Abdullah II ordered "urgent aid" to Falouja. In Egypt, hundreds of worshippers demonstrated in al-Azhar mosque and demanded "opening the door for al-Jihad and opening the borders between Egypt and Palestine." A demonstration was also held in Damascus.

During a demonstration organized after Friday's prayers in Gaza, the " Islamic Jihad" called on the Arab peoples to rise in support of the Palestinian and Iraqi people against the American and Israeli occupation forces. The leading figure in the Islamic Jihad movement, Muhammad al-Hindi, said that what is " wanted from the Arab people is to maintain an uprising in support of the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples against this conspiracy." He added "as for the governments, nothing is good expected from them."

In Amman, the Jordanian King Abdullah II ordered the dispatching of " urgent aid " to Falouja city "including foodsuffs, medicines and blankets as a contribution to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people in the city." The King also demanded an "increased readiness of the Jordanian field hospital," which was built for Falouja one year ago.

In Cairo, hundreds of worshippers demonstrated inside al-Azhar mosque in the first anniversary for the collapse of Baghdad, with the participation of symbols from the political and party forces in Egypt. The demonstrators demanded "opening up the door for Jihad and opening the borders between Egypt and Palestine so as the Egyptian people will participate with the Palestinians their Jihad and resistance against the Israeli army." Witnesses said the Egyptian police challenged hundreds of demonstrators in al-Areesh city to the north of Sinai on the occasion of Baghdad occupation first anniversary and Deir Yassin massacre.

In Bahrain, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Muhammad Abdul Ghaffar, said that the "Kingdom follows up with concern the developments of the situation in Iraq and the followed regrettable events." In Damascus, some 500 Syrians demonstrated after Friday's sermon in solidarity with the resistance of the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples chanting slogan against the US.
