Washington, Khartoum reject Annan's call for foreign military intervention in Darfour
Sudan-USA, Politics, 4/8/2004

Both Khartoum and the American administration yesterday refused a call advocated by the UN secretary general Kofi Annan for a foreign military intervention in Darfour district to the west of Sudan, while the US President George W. Bush called on the Sudanese government to put an end to the "brutal acts" in the district.

Annan warmed yesterday before the UN human rights committee on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the war of extermination in Rwanda that there might be a need for a military intervention from abroad in order to halt racial extermination in Darfour area.

One American official said that the American government have not yet thought of an international military intervention and stresses diplomatic efforts to stop the violence. The official added "if matters will not be improved for the better, we might be then in a position that requires international intervention." For its turn, Khartoum refused Annan's call. The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael welcomed providing the area with aid, but he told journalists in Khartoum that there is no need for a military action.

He added that his country is not in need for a foreign military forces and that it makes all its efforts, according to available resources. He added that what Sudan wants from the international community is Sudan to be supported by more humanitarian aid and supplies so as to be able to help the needy.

Meantime, Bush said "the recent fighting in Sudan's Darfour opened a new page in the history of this troubled country. The Sudanese government has to stop immediately the brutal acts committed by the local militias against the native people and to let the humanitarian organizations reach the place." He added "I condemn the crimes which lead to the dislocation of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese and I had informed the Sudan President ( Omar) al-Bashir directly of my view point."
