Al-Assad's message to French peer

Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad on Tuesday evening sent a message to French President Jacques Chirac. Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam delivered the letter in presence of French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier.

Both sides exchanged view points over the situation in the region and the peaceful process in addition to the need to a clear vision that achieves the comprehensive peace on the basis of UNSC resolutions 242 and 338 as to pledge peace and stability in the region.

Talks between the French President and Vice President touched upon Iraq and suffering of the Iraqi people during which Khaddam expressed Syria's view of the need to guarantee the Iraqi people's unity and to end occupation as well as to hold free elections under the auspices of the UN with the formation of an elected council that writes the constitution and an elected governments emerges from.

They discussed presented projects to develop the Middle East where Vice President confirmed that reform and development are two persisting needs. He also welcomed the European ideas to back the process of development in the region in accordance with conditions and needs of each country.

The terror question was also on the agenda of the talks in which Khaddam stressed the necessity of dealing with this problem and cooperate in a constructive way as to prevent its exacerbation.

The Vice President reviewed with President Chirac bilateral relations between Syria and France. Views have agreed on the significance of these ties and the need to upgrade them after they have become traditional and deep.
