Syria's population is about 20 million

A report issued recently by the Syrian ministry of the interior said that number of Syria's population in 2003 reached 20 million, half of them are males.

The report of the statistics list of the Syrians Arabs registered in the civil status records for 2003 said that number of Syria's population in the previous year was 19936573, with slightly more half of them are males, estimated by the statistics as 10017630 males and the others are females.

The governorates of Aleppo has the first rate in terms of population number. Its population tolls 4764115, then comes Homs of 1790859; Hama and then the capital Damascus whose population is 1572445, while population of Damascus countryside reached 1536660. The last is Quneitra with a population of 399264.

According to official estimated population growth in Syria is estimated at 2.4% while population growth average is estimated at 3.3%.
