Prof. Mattie and the findings of Ebla

The Italian Prof. Paolo Mattie, who unearthed the Syrian historical city of Ebla, described existing cooperation between his country and Syria as an example to be followed for Europe-Arab cooperation.

Prof. Mattie, who discovered the Syria city state of Ebla, near Aleppo, and is still working on deciphering its tablets, is also a member of the Supreme Board of the Italian La Spienza University, told SANA correspondent in Rome that Syria is the cradle of civilization and a bridge for civilized communication between the East and West.

The Italian renowned researcher was speaking on the sidelines of the 'The International Conference on Ebla Archeological Sites" which ended in Rome Tuesday.

He said Syria is full of archeological treasures, including the central city of Palmyra, the Kingdoms of Mary and Ebla, adding that the recent excavations near the cities of Homs and Aleppo prove that the country was the center of an independent, great civilization that flourished in the heart of the old Orient Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley.

For her part, Francis Binnok, Prof. of Archeology at the of the Italian La Spienza and Palermo as well as other German universities, talked about her experience in the field of archeological excavations in Syria, and expressed admiration of the distinguished status of Syria and the development it achieved.

Prof. Binnok said Syria had been a center of great civilization and the cradle of the three heavenly religions.

Other speakers, including Professors Duges Alfonso, Jean Walke Meir, Manfred Kriberniek, Winfred Orthman, Michel Maqdisi of the Syrian General Directorate of Archeology and Museums, Lan Marby Durand, Klin Schwarz, talked about Syria's richness of archeological sites and importance of excavated ruins and findings.
