Turkish Parliament Speaker for diplomatic solution of hotbed areas
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 4/7/2004

Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc on Tuesday reiterated his country's support to diplomatic efforts to reach settlements to the situations in Iraq, Palestine and Cyprus.

Arinc was quoted by the Turkish NTV satellite TV station as saying in a meeting of the EU Parliamentary Assembly in Istanbul that the situation in the Middle East couldn't be settled by war.

The Turkish Speaker of Parliament voiced dissatisfaction over the plan put by the UN Chief Kofi Annan on reuniting the divided island of Cyprus, saying it is necessary Cyprus join the EU in May as a united entity.

Mr. Arinc added that his government exerted great efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, pointing out that Annan's plan was met with some objections and didn't fully satisfy the Greek and Turkish sides.
