King Mohammed VI Meets Arab League Chief
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 4/6/2004

Morocco's King Mohammed VI received in Rabat Monday secretary General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa.

The Arab league's chief, who arrived on Sunday in Morocco part of a tour in preparation of the Arab summit, told the press after the audience the sovereign hopes the summit will be held the soonest and that preparations for the event will resume as soon as possible.

On Sunday, Morocco denied news that the kingdom might play host to the Arab Summit that was due in Tunisia early this month but was postponed by Tunisian authorities because of "divergences" among member countries.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation flatly denied the news as "groundless," stressing that efforts being undertaken by the Kingdom of Morocco these past days are part of pan-Arab consultations to hold this summit as soon as possible.

The Arab League chief also said after meeting the Moroccan sovereign discussions are still going on between the Arab states to reach a unified position on the issue, recalling that Tunisia still insists to host the summit.

Egypt had proposed to host the Arab summit (initially due on March 29-30).

Moussa said he will hold Monday similar talks with Saudi Crown prince, Abdallah Ibn Abdel Aziz, currently visiting Morocco.

After his visit to Morocco, the Arab league's chief will head to Mauritania. He will visit Algeria after the presidential elections in the north African country.

Earlier, he said the objective is to convene the summit in May, noting that there is enough time to reach a consensus on all the standing issues before the summit.
