On al-Assad's visit to Cairo

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Cairo before noon Sunday on a visit to Egypt. He was received at the airport by President Hosni Mubarak, Information Minister Safwat al-Sharif, Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, Head of the Presidential Office Zakareya Azmi and the Syrian Ambassador in Cairo Youssuf Ahmad and the embassy staff.

Later, the two Presidents held a bilateral meeting in the Presidential Lounge at the airport.

The bilateral meeting between al-Assad and Mubarak was followed by another plenary meeting which was attended by vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam, foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, Information Minister Safwat al-Sharif, Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and the Syrian Ambassador in Cairo Youssuf Ahmad.

Talks during the plenary meeting dealt with the ongoing contacts, talks and consultations on convening the Arab summit, the necessity for a good preparation for the summit to come to resolutions that serve the Arab Nation's higher interests and promote to the level of the standing challenges facing the Arab nation particularly in this critical stage.

Talks also dealt with the latest developments in the region and the bilateral relations between Syria and Egypt.

Later on, President Bashar al-Assad and the accompanied delegation returned home after a brief visit to Egypt.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday said that his talks with President Bashar al-Assad come in the framework of the continuous coordination between the two countries towards convening the Arab summit.

In a statement following talks with President al-Assad, Mubarak added that the most important thing is the holding of the Arab summit and that it results in resolutions that serve the Arab issues. He said that the time of the summit is probably during May.
