Al-Baja Jee warns the Shiite over hegemony in Iraq member of the Iraqi governing council
Iraq, Politics, 4/1/2004
Adnan al-Baja Jee yesterday warned the Iraqi Shiite of using their population majority to impose their views on other minorities in the country, but he admitted that there is no alternative for the rule of the majority after making general elections in January 2005 to elect a national council that lays a permanent constitution.
al-Baja Jee said in a press conference in Baghdad that the main features of democracy is reflected in the protection of minorities, in remarks to one article of dispute in the Iraqi provisional constitution which states the rights of two thirds of the population in three governorates out of 18 to reject a permanent constitution upon voting it.
He continued " this article will make the elected majority behave cautiously and with reason because it will not be in its interests to impose its visions on others at the national council." Al-Baja Jee indicated that he has a solution for this issue "satisfactory to all" including the Shiite majority " which no decision will be taken without its approval." But he gave no details on his expected proposal.
