At least some 100 Somalis were missed in the Gulf of Aden
Somalia, Politics, 3/31/2004

Some 100 persons were considered as missing in the waters of the Gulf during their attempt to reach Yemen last week from Pontland in the north of Somalia. Reasons behind this crisis are not known yet as no official statement was so far released by the Yemeni government.

Sources explained, according to Somalis living in Yemen that a boat sailed several days ago from Pontland area which announced independence unilaterally.

The Somali Hassan Farah, from Busaso, the capital of Pontland said that most passengers of the boat are Somalis including Ethiopians and were targeting Yemen from where it is easy to move to Saudi Arabia."

Several Somalis, however, seek to leave their country for Yemen and Saudi Arabia, fleeing the continued war and the deteriorated economic conditions in this country since the collapse of the Somali President Muhammad Seyad Berri in 1991.
