Meeting for the committee in charge of defending Saddam Hussein; disagreement among lawyers
Iraq, Politics, 3/31/2004

Jordanian former chairman of the Bar association, Saleh al-Armouti, said that the French lawyer Manuel who had volunteered to defend the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will arrive next week in Jordan to coordinate with the Jordanian defense committee, formed by several lawyers to defend Saddam Hussein.

Al-Armouti said in press statements that the committee in charge of defending Saddam Hussein continue its efforts in order to reach practical measures and it hold weekly meetings for this purpose.

Al-Armouti said he does not have information on Saddam's family rejection to assign the French lawyer Jack Verges to defend him and that information to that effect is that the son of Barzan al-Takreiti, assigned the French lawyer Verges who also assumes defense of Tareq Aziz, by an assignment from his son Ziad.

Al-Armouti explained that lawyer Verges is not a volunteer and he is working at a fully paid assignment and he is famous and specialized in international issues and that being a defender for the former President of Yugoslavia S. Milosovich, does not contradict with his defense of Saddam Hussein.
