Morocco, Syria poised to underpin cooperation in sea transport

Morocco and Syria are probing here this March 28-30 means to strengthen bilateral sea cooperation.
Speaking at the opening session of the Moroccan-Syrian merchant navy joint commission, Azzedine Diouri, senior official at the equipment and transport ministry, underscored the necessity to encourage sea transport companies to promote this activity in order to face foreign competitiveness and keep pace with international evolution.
Diouri briefed Syrian officials on the development of the sea transport sector in Morocco, noting that the Moroccan fleet is made up of 46 units which carried in 2002 around 6,8 million tons and made transactions valued at 1 billion Dirhams (1Dh: US $8.89).
Diouri told Map that Syrian officials expressed interest in the Moroccan merchant navy sector, and voiced hope to benefit from Morocco's expertise and technical support.
The Moroccan official, currently leading a Moroccan delegation to the works of the joint commission, is taking part Monday in a colloquium on the setting up of a multimode Euro-Mediterranean transport network.
