Amman: detention of 60 persons burnt the Jordanian flag in a Palestinian demonstration
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 3/30/2004

The spokeswoman for the Jordanian Government, Asmaa Khuder, said yesterday that 60 persons were detained in al-Wahdat Palestinian camp who took part in demonstrations deploring the assassination of the spiritual leader of the Hamas Movement, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, following Friday's prayers and carried out acts of riots including the burning of the Jordanian flag.

Khuder said that the demonstration was not licensed. She added " it was agreed in the previous day for one demonstration only in Amman, but we were surprised of al-Wahdat demonstration in which the demonstrators burnt 30 cars and damaged trade centers, threw stones and burnt the Jordanian flag.

Khuder continued "persons proved not to be involved in the riots will be released and those proved involved will be tried." She considered that the "expression of anger and the regret each Jordanian feels in the occupied lands is in the heart of all Jordanians." She added humiliating a national symbol which is the Jordanian flag constitutes a grave legal violation, besides attacks imposed on others.

Members of the Islamic labor party accused the Jordanian police of beating one parliamentarian and chairman of the party branch, but the minister of the interior said that the parliamentarian and persons with him took part in an unlicensed demonstration.
