Elimination of differences between Syria and Libya on mass destruction weapons
Syria-Libya, Politics, 3/29/2004

One Arab diplomat said that the meetings which was held on Friday evening succeeded in eliminating the Syrian- Libyan difference over the question of the mass destruction weapons, stated in the recommendations that were due to be submitted to the summit.

A row took place between the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara and his Libyan peer Abdul Rahman Shalqam. This was after Tripoli had asked the Arab states to take it as an example in the issue of giving up the mass destruction weapons.

Al-Shara called on the summit to be confined to the call to make the Middle East a region free from nuclear weapons, including Israel. He said " that the Arab states have not to give any thing priceless." The source said that the Arab ministers agreed to "alienate the Libyan request to the summit, to welcome Libya's decision getting rid off programs for mass destruction weapons, and calling on the Arab states to follow it as an example to that."
