Egyptian students call for war summit, imprisonment sentences for 26 Islamists from al-Tahrir party
Egypt, Politics, 3/26/2004
The Egyptian judiciary yesterday sentenced 26 persons, including three British, to imprisonment periods ranging between one and five year because of their membership in the banned Islamic Tahrir ( liberation) party.
The state security court, a special court which does not accept cassation decisions, stated 5 years imprisonment on 12 persons who are 3 British, one Palestinians and 8 Egyptians. The court also sentenced other 7 Egyptians to three year imprisonment and the other 7 for one year imprisonment.
The convicted persons chanted simultaneously " Wake up Muslims of Iraq, Iraq after Palestine, tomorrow, who will be the victims?"
On the other hand, hundreds of Egyptian students at Cairo university yesterday demonstrated against the US and Israel and tried to get out of the university complex but the riot- fighting police deterred them immediately.
The students chanted slogans like "Bush is the enemy of God" and "down fall for Israel" and raised one banner saying "Palestine and Iraq is one case." They also tried to get out of the university main gate out but were banned by the riot- fighting policemen after blocking the road to the main door of the University. However, many of them were able to join a group of almost 150 members including members in the opposition parties gathered in front of the University's main entrance and the riot- fighting men were deployed around the demonstrators who called for a summit dedicated for the war against Israel and distributed bulletins deploring the assassination of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin. The statement accuses the Arab leaders of conspiring in the assassination operation. They also denounced the Egyptian leadership by saying: Egypt's rulers are partners in the crime by their persistence on the lie of peace."
