Al-Hassan Bin Talal: Israeli might destroy Beirut
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 3/26/2004

Jordan former crown prince al-Hassan Bin Talal, who is also uncle of the Jordanian King Abdullah II, yesterday warned against "another second world war looming," unless a "new Middle East Varssay Treaty is reached."

Prince al-Hassan spoke of the Israeli threats against Lebanon and said " we might see Beirut destroyed tomorrow, I do not want to exaggerate but this will change the march of peace ultimately." Prince al-Hassan told the BBC that "the war against terrorism, the war on Iraq and Afghanistan, the mass destruction weapons and Iran: all that is a mixture that forms the signs for a third world war looming in front of our eyes."

Prince Hassan criticized the assassination of the leader of the Hamas movement Sheikh Ahmad Yassin. He said "every and each new assassination operation being by a state or a group takes us apart from the common objective which is comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

Prince al-Hassan regretted that all current options currently studied in Israel are "security options," like the killing of other Palestinian leaders or striking Lebanon; in remarks to the threats made by the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and the Israeli officials to continue liquidation operations and striking of Lebanon.

He said " we might see Beirut destroyed tomorrow. I do not want to exaggerate the matter but this will change the peace process ultimately." Prince Hasan explained "we are in need of a treaty like that of Verysay for the Middle East" and there should be an intervention from outside forces between the Israelis and the Palestinians." The Versay agreement which was signed in June 1919 had put an end to the first world war.
