Moroccan agriculture accounted for 1.1% of economic growth in 2002, report
Morocco, Economics, 3/25/2004

Agriculture in Morocco accounted for 1.1 % of the country's "real economic growth" in 2002 against 3.1% the previous year, according to an official report.

The annual report concerning the agricultural campaign 2001-2002, released Wednesday by the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, noted that the share of agriculture in the Gross Domestic product (GDP) reached 14.2% in 2002 compared to 13.4 in 2001, despite a 7% rain deficit compared to a normal year.

Presenting the report, minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohaned Laenser deplored the "stagnation of Morocco's share in world agricultural exports" and called for a "strong reform policy to upgrade the agricultural sector and improve the rural world." (MAP)MK

Yassine Assassination: Morocco condemns 'odious act'

Geneva, Mar. 24 (MAP) - Morocco has "strongly" condemned as "odious act" the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassine by the Israeli army.

Addressing on Wednesday the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Commission, Morocco's permanent representative Omar Hilale denounced Israel's strategy aiming at eliminating the Palestinian leaders.

He recalled the message sent by Moroccan King Mohammed VI to Palestinian President Yasser Aaraft in which the sovereign, as chairman of the Al Quds (Jerusaleam) Committee, -an offshoot of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC)- strongly condemned the attack, as a "violation of all celestial religions, human values and international covenants."

The King recalled that the Kingdom of Morocco has already expressed refusal of Tel Aviv's orientation to conduct "systematic brutal raids, and through the adoption of the logic of assassination and force to subdue the brotherly Palestinian people with its various constituents and institutions."

The sovereign further voiced "continued support and solidarity" with the Palestinian president and the Palestinian people.

The same condemnation was voiced on Tuesday in New York by Morocco's delegate to the UN, Karim Medrek during the debate of the Security Council on the consequences of this assassination on the situation in the Middle east.

"At a time when the international community was expecting with hope a new impetus to the peace process, Israel has carried out the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassine and a group of Palestinian citizens," noted the Moroccan delegate.
