Israeli Knesset celebrates camp David, one third of members attending; Sharon: we are ready for peace with Syria and Lebanon
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 3/25/2004
The Israeli Knesset yesterday celebrated the 25th anniversary of signing the Camp David agreement with Egypt. The celebration was characterized by the absence of the Egyptian representatives from this celebration and Sharon's investment of the occasion to align himself from the accusation that he is leading the region towards wars.
In a speech he had delivered before the session from which were absent one third of the members, especially from the extremist right, noted the contradiction between Sharon's talk and actions.
In his speech, Sharon considered that this session is considered an honor for the Isralei former Prime minister Menahim Begin and the former Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat. He also talked about the Israeli- Egyptian relations since the signing of the camp David agreements saying that these relations started to witness slow warming recently after a long stalemate, considering that "the Camp David agreement which continued even after the assassination of al-Sadat and all ups and downs in the region, proved it is not a special bilateral agreement, rather a strategic agreement serving the two countries."
He indicated the impact of the agreement on the Israeli- Jordanian relations later and on the Israeli economy. Sharon indicated Israel's readiness to " proceed forward with its neighbors towards the optimum peace, persistently and bravely." And recalled in this regard Lebanon a, Syria and the Palestinians
