Gul highlights significance of Beirut summit's initiative on ME peace
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 3/25/2004
Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul stressed the importance of the Arab peace initiative approved by Beirut summit as a base for the resumption of the peace process in the Middle East.
In an interview given to Lebanese newspaper al-Mustaqbal published on Wednesday, Gul said that the Arab initiative should be a means for urging Europe and Russia to compel Israel and Washington to accept it as a base for the resumption of peace negotiations in the region.
Gul described the assassination of Hamas Leader Sheikh Ahmad Yassin as an unacceptable political crime, asserting that Sharon's target of deporting all the Palestinians to Jordan and preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state hasn't changed.
Gul called on the Arabs to beware of the ongoing events in Iraq. " The underway events in Iraq are considered the second step for rebuilding the region," asserting that Israel's target is to prevent reaching a unified Arab stance in this regard.
He warned against the foreign intervention, asserting the importance for the Arabs to depend on themselves in solving their own problems.
