Abul Gheit: Egypt keen on getting international peace guarantees for Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 3/24/2004
Out of its keenness on getting solid international peace guarantees for Sudan, Egypt is closely following up ongoing discussions to outline the size and nature of the role which the United Nations is to play in Sudan in the future, Egypt's Ambassador to the UN Ahmed Abul-Gheit said Tuesday.
He stressed Egypt's interest in maintaining Sudan's territorial integrity and on bringing about justice, peace and equality to all the people of Sudan.
He highlighted the importance of current talks in the UN over a report prepared by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies on international peace guarantees in Sudan.
The report was made at the request of the US State Department which said that it would help in the formation of a US vision of the possible challenges that may hamper the implementation of a final settlement in Sudan.
The report which covers many aspects of life inside Sudan, sheds light on the way the UN can contribute to Sudan's peace march, especially in the six-year transitional period that is to follow the signing of a final Sudanese peace deal, Abul-Gheit said.
According to him the prevailing trend inside the UN at present is in favour of sending a multinational peacekeeping mission to Sudan.
