Zeibari highlights Syria, Iraq relations

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zeibari has asserted that the bilateral relations linking the two states, Syria and Iraq, are old and historical, pointing out that this current visit to Damascus aimed at strengthening these relations and continuing dialogue between the two countries.

In a press conference held yesterday, he described his meeting with President Bashar al-Assad as very friendly, positive and useful, where all issues and developments in the region were discussed, along with bilateral relations with the two countries.

He indicated that Iraq and the governing council are committed to developing and strengthening relations with all the neighboring states especially Syria.

Zebari said that he discussed during the visit the issue of coordinating positions towards the proposed projects, issues of reform in Iraq, as well as measures followed to build up the military forces and security bodies.

He pointed to Iraq's need for help from the neighboring countries especially Syria, to establish security and stability in Iraq and the region, as well as its need for the UN help in the issues of power transition and the organization of elections.

On the role that Syria could play in the reconstruction of Iraq, Zebari asserted that Syria has an important role in helping the Iraqis build their state and restore sovereignty, commending Syria's positions towards the Iraqi people.
