Bush urges Bashir and Garang to have an agreement
Sudan-USA, Politics, 3/23/2004

The American president George W. Bush yesterday urged the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and leader of the southern rebels to eliminate their differences and reach a quick agreement on peace.

The spokesman for the White House said that Bush notified Bashir and John Garang via the telephone that it is ripe time for Sudan to show the world that it can make peace and improve the quality of life for the Sudanese as a whole." He said that Sudan's relations with the USA will be changing with the signing of the agreement.

Mediators in the inter- Sudanese talks which was due to be completed yesterday said that the negotiation will extend until March 31st. The main mediator Lazaraos Simbayo said from Nivasha that "negotiations will continue and it will be very possible that the two sides will agree on other remaining issues by the fall of the end of the month." He added that the Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Taha and Garang " are currently negotiating on the points of differences as whole."

On the other hand, the rebels of Darfour area " the movement for justice and equity in Sudan " expressed their readiness to negotiate with Khartoum in any "neutral country," following the declaration of a nearby meeting for the warring sides in Njamina.

In a statement the movement set a precondition from Liverpill: to dismantle weapons of pro Khartoum militias, and non- intervention of the Sudanese jets and an international plane sorties in Darfour before any cease- fire, and stressed that the government of Chad did not officially notify it of the convening of the meeting between the warring sides in Darfour "very soon," as announced by the Chad's presidency last Friday.
