Second session of Comoros elections started
Comoros, Politics, 3/22/2004

Officials in the federal government in Moroni said that voting operations in the second session of the legislative elections in the three islands is proceeding " normaly."

The minister of transport said " We have not so far received complaints." However, voting operations stopped in one of Moroni's offices, hours after starting it, after one candidate complained against the election list fixed in the center.

Calm prevailed Moroni streets but the balloting centers did not witness great turnout as happened in the first session. Some 80 candidates are competing to win 41 seats remained from the first session in the whole three islands.

The elections as a whole are decided to be held at the level of the federation as a whole on April 18 and 25. This is the first elections at the country level and is considered the last phase of the national reconciliation operation after the foundation of the federation in 2001 which is presumed to put an end to the conflict between the islands and the federal authority.
