UN considers the situation in Darfour at the largest humanitarian catastrophe
Sudan-UN, Politics, 3/20/2004

The UN coordinator for humanitarian operations in Sudan, Mokayesh Capilla, announced that the current conflict in Darfour province to the west of Sudan constitutes today the largest world catastrophe at the humanitarian level and human rights.

The UN coordinator from Nairobi reported that the conflict which erupted in Darfour in February 2003 resulted in the killing of more than 10,000 persons and more than one million dislocated.

Capilla indicated that what is taking place in the area recalls to mind the operations of mass annihilation that took place in Rwanda, noting that the difference between Rwanda and Darfour is in the number of who were killed, died, tortured and raped.

Darfour state is witnessing battles between the rebels of the Sudan liberation movement and the government forces supported by local militias. Various humanitarian sources said that these battles in that area resulted in killing almost 3,000 persons and dislocating 670,000 persons inside Sudan and 100,000 to Chad.

The European Union, the American Agency for International development and the ICRC expressed their concern over the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in Darfour.
