Algeria, Politics, 3/19/2004
The presidential elections campaign was launched yesterday ( Thursday) in Algeria. The elections are to be on April 8 amid heated debate among candidates to win the voters and convince them of their elections programs through people's aggregations and media interventions.
The election campaign which continues until April 5, two days before the date of voting, starts amid fears of falsifying the elections, to the extent it reached the opposition's accusations of the government of not being neutral and standing behind one candidate at the expense of others.
Six candidates are competing, led by the current President Abdul Aziz Butaflika who seeks a second term of office and his opponent the secretary general of the national liberation front Ali Benflis, whose assets and party activities were frozen by the judiciary, in addition to the Islamic candidate and leader if the national reform movement Sheikh Saad Abdullah Jabullah.
The next competition also includes each of the leader of the coalition for culture and democracy Saee Saadi known for his secular views, Leiza Hanoun, the spokeswoman for the labor party, accounted for the Communist trend as well as Fawzi Ali Rabbain, the candidate of the party "of era 1954" ( in remarks of the Algerian liberation revolution which was launched in November 1954).
Howver, Butaflika is considered the most likely to win especially after signing a presidential alliance charter in support of his reelections including the democratic national coalition led by the prime minister Ahmad O Yahya; the peace society movement of Islamic inclination led by Bujarra Sultani and what is known as the correction movement for the national liberation front, led by the foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem.
