One Palestine killed; acts of detentions in the West Bank
Palestine-Israel, Military, 3/19/2004
One Palestinian died because of his wounds he had during the Israeli military invasion of Rafah camp in Gaza. After its withdrawal from the camp which it had broke into on Wednesday, the occupation forces detained some 17 Palestinians in various parts of the West Bank.
News reports said that the acts of detentions covered 6 Palestinians in Ramullah and two others in Hebron, Bethlehem and Qalqilya. The Israeli forces also broke into the old town in Nablus under intensive fire and detained six Palestinians including four members of the Fatah movement.
Palestinian security sources said yesterday that the occupation army demolished during the incursion operation in Rafah camp some 37 Palestinian houses wholly or partially, adding that damages were also inflicted on 46 houses during the demolishing and bombardment operation of the camp.
Six Palestinians were killed during the two past days in raids launched by the occupation forces against Gaza.
On the other hand, the Israeli military court in Ofer sentenced Sheikh Hassan Yousef, one of the Hamas leaders in the West Bank, to 28 months imprisonment and accused him of having a high ranking position in a banned movement and provoking against Israel.
Meantime, the Israeli radio and Yediot Ahronot daily quoted Israeli military officials as saying on Thursday that withdrawal from Gaza, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon talks about, will take one and a half years.
The officials told the radio that this withdrawal might not take place before the next American elections in November 2004.
It is, however, presumed that the Israeli government will ratify this withdrawal and dismantle the settlements in Gaza before voting in the Knesset or rather a referendum to this effect.
Observers say that the majority of Likud ministers including the foreign and finance ministers oppose Sharon's initiative.
