Saudi Arabia to reconsider human rights violations
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 3/16/2004

A high ranking Saudi Arabian official said on Sunday that Riyadh is about to form a governmental commission in charge of investigating human rights violation reports.

The Saudi foreign ministry secretary for political affairs prince Turkey Bin Muhammad Bin Masoud al-Kabir said this organization had been planned for since several years and its members will have the right to directly contact King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and the Crown Prince Abdullah.

Prince Turkey explained this delay to Riyadh's readiness to make this society strong and solid, noting that "we have to come up with an organization that can work effectively." The prince indicated that the organization will deal with all government ministries and agencies and will be presided over by "top efficient people" in contact with the king and the crown prince.

Last week Saudi Arabia green-lighted the birth of the first independent human rights association and during the two past years Saudi Arabia permitted the visit of a UN official concerned with human rights and a team from the Human Rights Watch organization which has New York as a headquarters.
