Israel refuses burying Abu al-Abbas in Ramullah
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/15/2004
The Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said yesterday that the Israeli government refused a request proposed by the Palestinian authority for permitting the burial of the secretary general of the Palestine liberation front, Muhammad Abbas "Abu al-Abbas", in Ramullah.
The occupation forces in Iraq announced last week that Abu al-Abbas died in an American prison to the south of Baghdad from natural reasons.
Abu al-Abbas's widow, Reem al-Nimer, who lives in Beirut asked for burying him in Ramullah at his won wish. A Palestinian official source said on Saturday that the Palestinian authority is waiting for Israel's consent to be able to bury Abu al-Abbas in the West Bank. One official at the office of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat said that the "Americans agreed to hand over his body, but the Israelis have not yet approved burying it there."
The spokesman for the Palestine liberation front said the American authorities notified the Palestinian embassy in Iraq that Abu al-Abbas body will be transported, without defining a date for that; under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
