First parliamentary elections started in Comoros federation
Comoros, Politics, 3/15/2004
The first legislative elections started in Comoros federation yesterday ( Sunday) with the participation of some 255,160 voters.
The voters will cast their votes for representatives for the parliamentary council in the federation's three independent islands which are Injwan, the Greater Comoros area and Moheli, in the context of the first round of the elections. The second round will be on March 21st, while elections at the level of the federation's council will be in April.
The voting process was greatly delayed in the capital Moroni, where ballot centers were not opened until 6.30 GMT, while voting operations started at the set time with just half an hour delay in Injwan. The elections committee said that the voting started in common conditions in the Greater Comoros islands, except in the capital.
The committee attributed the delay in Moroni and Injwan to technical reasons linked in particular to providing the offices with elections supplies.
The competition is confined between candidates supported by the islands and candidates of the central authority of the chairman of the federation Col. Ghazelle Othman.
These elections will constitute the last phase of the national reconciliation operation in the islands, which is situated in the Indian Ocean which has been witnessing tension since 1977.
This election process, however, is supervised by foreign observers sent by the African and European Unions and the Francophony International organization. On Monday a group of police from South Africa arrived in Moroni to supervise the process of the elections.
