Egypt tables initiative to enhance Arab Women Organization
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 3/9/2004
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak offered an initiative during the Arab Women and Armed Conflicts Forum in the Lebanese capital Beirut during the discussions on the budget of the Arab Women Organization and the 12 members' quotas.
Farkhonda Hassan, Secretary General of the Egyptian National Council for Women (NCW), said the initiative targets furnishing permanent funds for the organization through setting up a donation fund, adding that Mrs. Mubarak declared Egypt's donation as the first Arab contribution in this fund, followed by a donation from Sheikha Sbeika bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, spouse of King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain.
She said the Arab Women Organization, established within the framework of the Arab League, aims at buttressing Arab action in the field of women's conditions upgrading.
Meanwhile, Egypt forwarded a 27-page paper to the forum setting five requirements vital to peace, namely termination of occupation of Arab lands, respect to the international legitimacy resolutions, halt of all Israeli settlement policies in the Palestinian territories, transfer of power to Iraqi people through direct free elections and respect by all parties to the provisions of international law.
On the other hand, Mrs. Mubarak and Mrs. Andree Lahoud, spouse of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, attended with Arab First Ladies an art gallery held on the sidelines of the forum, which sheds light on Lebanese women's works of art.
