One Yemeni sentenced for 20 years imprisonment over attacking American restaurants in Lebanon
Lebanon-Yemen, Local, 3/9/2004

A Lebanese military court sentences to 20 year imprisonment with labor, one Yemeni who was convicted of carrying out a series of attacks by bombs against branches for American take-away food restaurants and planning for attacking the American embassy in Beirut.

The court said that it found Mu'amar Awameh guilty of committing terrorist acts, and being a member in " a terrorist cell," and also convicted him of committing falsification operations.

Awameh denied in February to be behind these attacks and also denied what he alleged links with Osama Bin Laden, leader of al-Qaida organization. He informed the military attorney that he did not know any of the persons involved in the blowing up of restaurants. The explosion by a booby trapped car in one of MacDonald restaurants in Beirut in April 2003 did not result in casualties.

The Lebanese military court also sentenced some 15 persons in absentia in a similar accusation against persons who are members of Osbat al-Ansar, an unidentified group listed by Washington as a terrorist organization suspected to have links with al-Qaida organization.

The group which has its headquarters in Ein al-Helweh camp for the Palestinian refugees where Awameh lived denied these accusations.

In December, 2003 Lebanon sentenced 17 men between three months and life imprisonment sentences over being convicted in carrying out attacks against American restaurants and involvement in an alleged conspiracy to assassinate the American ambassador in Lebanon, Vincent Battle.

These attacks took place in the peak of the Palestinian Intifada against the Israeli occupation and the American war against Iraq.
