Al-Shara confers with Japanese envoy

Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara received in Damascus on Sunday the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Okamoto.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region particularly in Iraq, the importance of enhancing Japanese investment projects in Syria and activating the economic cooperation between the two countries to the benefit of the two countries interests.

Talks also touched upon the bilateral relations between Syria and Japan and ways of enhancing them in all domains.

on the other hand, Okamoto stressed the importance of Syria's role in the region and in establishing just and comprehensive peace. In a press statement after a meeting with Foreign Minister Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, he emphasized importance of establishing firm bilateral relations between Syria and Japan, saying there is a positive impression among the Japanese about Syria.

The Japanese official said he believed that a strategic partnership could be established between Tokyo and Damascus, adding that points of view were identical over the issues discussed with Shara, pointing out that Shara expressed Syria's desire to cooperate with Japan.

Answering a question on what is called Greater Middle East project, Okamoto said his talks with al-Shara didn't deal directly with this issue. He expressed the belief that democracy must be built by people themselves, and the process of reform comes through the culture and history of the peoples concerned. He stressed that it is illogical to impose this process on the peoples in the framework of democracy.
