Morocco seeks Pakistani investments in offshore and onshore oil prospecting

Morocco wishes to see Pakistan invest in onshore and offshore oil prospecting in the Kingdom and draw benefit from the expertise of this country in the gas and oil sectors, Moroccan minister of energy and mining Mohamed Boutaleb told MAP after a meeting, in Rabat Thursday, with visiting speaker of the Pakistani House of Representatives, Chaudhry Amir Hussain.

Boutaleb who called for a partnership with Pakistan said his department has worked out a national strategy aiming at reducing Morocco energy bill amounting to 16 billion Dirhams a year (around 1,7 billion dollars).

Concerning phosphates, the minister said a partnership agreement has been signed between the state-owned "Office Cherifien des Phosphates" (OCP) and the Pakistani company "Al Noor Fertilizer industries Limited" (ANFIL).

Tamir Hussain who is paying a five-day visit to Morocco at the invitation of his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouahed Radi, also met with the Prime Minister Driss Jettou who noted the various investment opportunities available for the two countries' private sectors notably in the fields of phosphates, food industry, textile and handicraft.

He called on Pakistan to seize opportunities provided by Morocco's association agreements with the European Union and free trade agreements with some Arab states and the United States.

The Pakistani Speaker voiced his country's solidarity with the Moroccan people following last week's earthquake in the province of Al Hoceima (north east morocco) and praised Morocco's democratic process.

Amir Hussain also probed with speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives Abdelouahed Radi means to bolster cooperation between the two countries' parliaments. A Moroccan-Pakistani Friendship Committee was set up by the two houses.
