Muslim Brothers propose a reform initiative in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 3/4/2004

The general Murshid ( Guide ) for the Muslim brothers in Egypt, Muhammad Mahdi Akef, called for converting Egypt into a Parliamentary republic and the abrogation of the executive authorities of the President of the Republic.

In a press conference at the headquarters of the Journalists Union in Cairo, Akef proposed the Muslim Brothers initiative for political reforms in Egypt, stressing that reform requires keeping the army away from policy and dedicating itself just for ensuring the state's security.

The initiative included four main areas for reforms: building the Egyptian citizen; political reforms, reforming the judiciary and electoral reforms.

At the beginning of his Speech, Akef stressed the rejection of Muslim Brothers in Egypt for the foreign reforms initiatives, stressing that the Muslim Brothers group condemns the attempts of foreign hegemony and all forms of foreign interventions in the affairs of Egypt, the Arab region and the Islamic world.

He explained that the beginning should be with the political reforms, considering that it is the starting point for reforming all walks of life.

The Muslim Brothers initiative called for honoring the right of the individual to political participation and abidance by the rotating authority principle through free and honest voting, and renewed stress on the liberty of belief and the freedom of religious rituals for all recognized divine religions.

Akef also called for the freedom of forming the political parties and convening massive meetings and the right of peaceful demonstration.

In the area of judiciary, the initiative called for honoring the independence of the judiciary in all its stages, and to modify laws so as to be inline with the Islamic Jurisprudence.

Observers consider that the Muslim Brothers initiative comes at a crucial time in which Egypt proposes a project for Arab political reform to the Arab League.
