Gulf states support Qatar in its crises with Russia
Gulf-Qatar, Politics, 3/2/2004

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have expressed their support for the state of Qatar in its crisis with Russia over the assassination of the former President of Chechenea, Salim Khan Yanderbaieve, in Doha. This was expressed in conclusion of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh.

The foreign ministers condemned the assassination of Yanderbaieve by blowing up his car on February 13 and described it as a criminal act, violating the religious, moral and Islamic values.

The ministers expressed their solidarity with Qatar and their support for all measures taken and to be taken to disclose the implications of this incident and to preserving security and stability in its country.

The crisis was escalated following the detention of two Qataris in Russia after Qatar had accused two members of the Russian intelligence of killing Yanderbaieve. The foreign ministers of the GCC concluded their meeting on Sunday without declaring a unified stand on plans to reform the Arab League, stressing that this issue will be discussed with their counterparts in the Arab League.

The ministerial council also discussed the development of conditions in Iraq and stressed the need of exerting all its unity and sovereignty and non- interference in its internal affairs.

The final statement indicated the need that the UN has to play a pivotal role to enable the Iraqi people to decide their political future as soon as possible.

Concerning the situation in Palestine, the council condemned the practices of the Israeli occupation forces and expressed hope to reviving the peace process through the Arab initiative and the Roadmap plan.
