The UN calls for providing aid to Somalia
Somalia-UN, Local, 3/1/2004
The UN has advocated a relief appeal for projects in Soel Hill in Northern Somalia. It explained in a statement on Saturday that it is in need of 11 million dollars to provide urgent aid to some 200,00 shepherds who are facing the drought which strongly affected the cattle.
In addition to supporting shepherds, this call also aims at giving help to more than 800,000 persons displaced by fighting inside Somalia or who had returned from exile in addition to scores of thousands of Somalis who belong to tribal minorities and former fighters.
The UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia commended the fact that the answer to drought by donors is so far positive. He stressed that "the number of effected persons is increasing and that some of them have not yet received the aid without which we expect huge sufferings."
Worthy mentioning that Somalia suffers a civil war since the collapse of the central government in 1991.
