Bahrain hosts meetings of the joint higher committee with Qatar
Bahrain-Qatar, Politics, 2/24/2004

The joint Bahraini- Qatar higher committee started its meetings yesterday in Manama under the chairmanship of Bahrain's crown prince, Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad al-Khaleifa, and Qatar's crown prince, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, according to an official source.

Bahrain's news agency said that the committee discussed several issues listed on the meeting's agenda relating to the development and promotion fields of bilateral cooperation and completion studies of projects agreed upon between the two states in economic and trade fields as well as the project of establishing a bridge linking the two states.

The agency indicated that during the meeting a memorandum of understanding for sport cooperation between the two states was signed, giving no details.

The agency quoted the crown prince of Bahrain as saying by the beginning of the meeting that convening the committee's meetings "come in translation of the aspirations of the King of Bahrain and the Amir of Qatar towards strengthening ties of amity and fraternity and to underlined matters relating to boosting joint cooperation in various fields for the benefit and welfare of the two sisterly countries." For his part, Sheikh Tamim commended the care given by the leaderships of the two states towards "developing and strengthening their relations and joint cooperation," noting that his visit to Bahrain "is an opportunity to follow up steps discussed by the committee and to work for supporting it, according to the agency.

The Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and the King of Bahrain Hamad Bin Issa al-Khalifa held on December 28 talks in Doha in which they agreed in particular on convening of a joint higher committee between the two states in the second half of February.

Relations between Manama and Doha witnessed coolness since the mid of 2003 after suspension of the joint committee chaired by the crown princes in each of the two states.

It was presumed that the committee will hold a meeting in Manama in April, 2003. The two countries formed a joint higher committee after the end of their joint border dispute in 2001 and in search of implementing several joint projects.
