Spanish ruling party: Moroccan-Spanish joint patrols not a breach to international legality
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 2/19/2004
The Spanish ruling Popular Party denied allegations by the separatist Polisario movement that Moroccan-Spanish joint patrols in the sea between the Sahara and the Canary Islands to control illegal immigration are breaching the international law.
President of the party in the Canary Islands, Jose Manuel Soria, explained that the decision to conduct joint sea patrols was made by the Moroccan and Spanish governments last November.
He further insisted that the Spanish government, which respects international law both at home and abroad, expects such decisions to be respected both by those who agree and those who don't.
The Spanish political leader was reacting to allegations by a Polisario leader who challenged the Moroccan-Spanish joint sea patrols as a violation of international law.
