Khatami is keen to visit Cairo, deliver al-Azhar sermon
Egypt-Iran, Politics, 2/19/2004

The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Maher has disclosed that the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami is eager to visit Cairo and deliver a speech at al-Azhar mosque.

Maher explained that Khatami "is looking forward to conditions that will permit him to visit Egypt and deliver a speech at al-Azhar mosque." Maher's statements came after his meeting with Khatami on Tuesday in Tehran where he was leading his country's delegation to the 8 Islamic states summit.

The Egyptian mass media considered that contrary to Maher's statements on the good intention between the two sides, there is no worthy mentioning progress to restore back relations between the two countries during this visit. However, reformers in Iran are careful to restore back relations which are severed between the two countries since long years.

The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had met in 2003 with his Iranian counterpart in Geneva. A matter which was considered an important step towards the normalization of Egyptian- Iranian relations. One Egyptian official said in January that the internal political differences in Iran might postpone the resumption of diplomatic relations between Cairo and Tehran.
