The first National Children Conference: promoting the values of teamwork and democracy
Syria, Politics, 2/13/2004

Under the patronage of Syria's First Lady, Asmaa al-Assad, the first National Children conference was held in Aleppo on February 8th through 9th, 2004.

The conference aims to analyze objectively the status of Syrian children, to figure out their problems and concerns and work out solutions to overcome them. It also aims at laying down the foundation stone for instilling creativity and innovation in children's character to render them more capable in interacting and coping with the massive changes and developments that are sweeping the world through, inter alia, inculcating the basic life skills of logical thinking, rational analysis, dialogue and acceptance of other's opinion and most importantly through promoting the values of teamwork and democracy.

The conference, moreover intends to consolidate the concepts of citizenship through upgrading the principles of right and duty in raising and up bringing children to become actual partners in building the future of the country.

Since the early preparations for the conference, Mrs. al-Assad was involved personally in the planning, preparation and execution stages out of her strong belief of the importance of drawing up a national strategy for the under-18 age group, who constitute around 50% of the total Syrian population.

On the sideline of the conference, several workshops focusing the significance of promoting environment- friendly concepts among children and their role in improving and protecting the environment were held. An ad hoc workshop on children rights which was attended mostly by children themselves was also held.

For the first time in Syria, socially sensitive issues were raised such as: Children deprived from family care; violence against Children and sexual abuse of children.
