Mubarak-Saleh summit to discuss regional scene; strong bilateral trade push
Egypt-Yemen, Politics, 2/7/2004

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh is to pay an official visit to Egypt next week for summit talks with President Hosni Mubarak on recent international and regional developments and bilateral ties.

"A high-level delegation including government officials and businessmen will accompany the Yemeni President during his visit," Egyptian Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Badr Eddin said in an interview with the Middle East News Agency (MENA).

Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abu Bakr al-Qirbi will join the delegation on his return from a visit to the US, Badr Eddin said.

The visit, which comes ahead of the Arab summit in Tunis next month, is well-timed as it will be an opportunity for both states to create a unified stance on issues that will be discussed during the summit, Badr Eddin told MENA.

Concerning the impact of the visit on the Egyptian-Yemeni relations, the ambassador said that the two sides will discuss means to promote bilateral ties in investment and trade. Egyptian-Yemeni trade exchange currently stands at approximately $80 million since Yemen increased imports of Egyptian cement, Ambassador Badr Eddin said.

Cement and building materials exports to Yemen are expected to rise dramatically this year, he said, adding that preparations are underway in Sanaa for the "Building the Pyramids in Yemen" exhibition, which is to open on April 10.

"Egypt hopes to increase its exports of pharmaceuticals, textiles and leather goods to Yemen, while we can expect more fish exports from Yemen," he told MENA.
