Iraq, Politics, 2/6/2004

The office of the Shiite Clergy, Ayatullah Ali al-Seisatni, in al-Najaf announced that he survived an assassination attempt he was exposed to on Thursday. A security official in the office said that gunmen opened fire at Ayatullah al-Seisatni while he was greeting people in al-Najaf but he was not damaged.

It explained that al-Seistani is in a good health situation, denying that he was taken to unidentified place in order to protect him.

Meantime, members of the Interim Governing Council, Muwafaq al-Rubei, said in conclusion of a meeting with al-Seistani that he is in a good health condition. He added "that people are surrounding him and providing him with care."

On the side responsible for this attempt, al-Rubei said that the "hands which targeted the headquarters of the UN, Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim, the ICRC hospital and Irbil are the same hand which tries to provoke sectarianism in the country.
