Darfour rebels support direct talks over aid
Sudan, Politics, 2/5/2004

Rebels from west Darfour announced on Tuesday that they will attend talks to permit the distribution of aid in the troubled area, on which relief agencies say that a humanitarian catastrophe is about to take place.

The talks which was proposed by Henry Dinant center, an organization that works for peace with Geneva as a headquarters, to negotiate on an agreement permitting relief agencies to get humanitarian aid there, that there is a strong need there for one million persons who were negatively effected as a result of the escalated conflict in Darfour.

The center explained that there are alternatives for halting the cease fire like "halting the conflict" or guarantees for a secure passage. The center said it has only an authorization for mediation over humanitarian issues, but did not rule out the possibility of discussing political issues among sides involved.

The UN said it calls for halting the cease- fire for humanitarian reasons and for halting the fight to get its employees from the capital of the province. The UN official Bin Barker said "we have the storage to give food, medicine and shelter, but getting into the place is the problem." The talks which will be held in Geneva on February 14 and 15 are the first direct talks between the two Darfour rebels and the government.

Analysts hope that these talks will reach a possible framework for peace talks because political issued will be debated, necessarily.
